Seeking Treatment for a Bulimia Nervosa Disorder in Houston
Adolescents with a bulimia nervosa diagnosis are at risk for developing many harmful long-term health effects without proper treatment. Before families finalize their search the right treatment center, it’s important to learn more about the health consequences associated with this type of eating disorder.
Common Signs and Symptoms
- Bulimia nervosa in teens often begins with an obsession over food, counting calories, and fad dieting. This obsession can cause teens to hide or hoard food away, eat their meals in secret and avoid any social situations that involve food.
- Adolescents with this condition tend to skip meals frequently, use the restroom often during and after meals, experience a lack of self-control when eating or binge eating and drink excessive amounts of water in an effort to feel full.
- Parents and other family members may notice signs associated with self-induced vomiting as well. Disappearing to the restroom is common for teens with bulimia nervosa and it’s common to hear the toilet flushing often in a single trip. Other signs of vomiting after meals include calluses on the knuckles or back of hands, discolored teeth and bad breath.
Long-Term Bulimia Nervosa Effects
- The reoccurring purging cycle can result in severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances have negative effects on every major organ system. Electrolyte imbalances most often have the greatest negative effect on the heart. People with this type of eating disorder can experience an irregular heartbeat and heart failure without treatment.
- Regular episodes of self-induced vomiting can also damage the esophagus. And if vomiting becomes particularly violent, the esophagus can tear and bleed. Repeated vomiting episodes can also result in tooth decay and painful tooth enamel erosion.
- Bulimia nervosa can also cause young women to experience infrequent menstrual periods and, in some cases, they may stop having a period altogether. With treatment, their natural cycle is likely to return to normal.
