How We Work with Families

At Clementine, it is incredibly important for us to guide the client and family through the treatment process in the most humane, compassionate way possible, and provide them with the education and care they need to help their loved one. Families become fully informed, active participants so they themselves can heal along with the patient.

We begin by guiding each adolescent and their family step-by-step through the admission process. We review the application, conduct a thorough medical and intake assessment, and contact the outpatient clinical team to gather information that will inform our initial approach. Families receive a thorough understanding of the financial arrangement along with guidance on how to prepare for treatment.

  • Close communication and direct access to treatment team
  • Weekly family therapy (on-site or remote)
  • Weekly multi-family group (on-site)
  • Parent education program every other weekend (on-site) | Psychoeducational seminar | Parent only support group | Nutrition planning, meal preparation, portioning, and behavior management skills
  • Varied and individualized exposure opportunities to practice meals and support the reintegration of the adolescent into family mealtimes after discharge

Families are a fundamental part of orientation.  From meeting with the treatment team upon arrival, to learning what the more encompassing plan for care will be. This “family roadmap” provides an understanding of how the family component is integrated into the program and what the client and family can expect.

Families are involved.

Communication continues through treatment and we understand that family integration is the cornerstone of successful treatment. As such we collaborate with families to better understand the adolescent’s experience and treatment, while addressing deeper psychological family dynamics in a contained, therapeutic setting. We offer psychotherapeutic support along with comprehensive education so that families are informed and empowered to support their loved ones. Due to the importance of families in treatment and ongoing recovery, participation in our Family Programming is mandatory. In a contained therapeutic setting, we involve families in beneficial ways, empowering them with knowledge and tools to support their child’s recovery.

At Clementine, medical education is an important part of our programs and nursing staff and physicians provide education to better help the adolescents and their families understand the impact of the eating disorder on their body. Medical topics include bone health, impact on the heart and brain, fertility issues, growth and development challenges, etc. Clementine psychiatrists work closely with families not only to find the right medication for the adolescents but also to provide extensive education sessions regarding medications, risks, benefits and alternatives.

As they move closer to discharge, the family is significantly involved so they can plan effectively.
